Troy Wright was born in Sydney, Australia and currently lives on the Gold Coast in Queensland. He started playing the drums at the age of 10 after being introduced to music at school. Throughout Troy's early years of school he was an active member of bands and community groups being exposed to a wide range of musical styles like funk, jazz, rock and orchestral music. He began receiving private drum lessons at the age of 12, where he learnt how to read, develop time, as well as being introduced to music by drummers such as Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, Virgil Donati and many more.
At the age of 16 Troy came 2nd in 'Australia's Best Up & Coming Drummer Competition’ held in Melbourne. At this stage Troy was also playing most nights of the week in various corporate cover bands and in musical productions in local theatres that required him to read. Troy also began teaching at local music shops, where his passion for teaching also began.
After finishing school, Troy decided he wanted to continue his studies with music through University. He studied a Bachelor of Popular Music at the Queensland Conservatorium, which gave him studio, writing and recording exposure. It was during these years where Troy also created his YouTube channel that featured drum covers, play throughs, drum lessons and other drum related videos, that now has 100 thousand subscribers and over 13 million collective views. From University Troy worked in various original projects that toured Australia, whilst growing a busy teaching schedule of private drum students, which later led to the opening of his own drum school and recording studio ‘The Wright Drum School’.
In 2015, Troy began working with Sydney guitarist Plini, which has since led to tours in Asia, North America, Europe and the UK. More recently Troy recorded drums on Plini’s latest album - Hand Made Cities at the Wright Drum School facility. Troy has since also played drums with Intervals (Canada), David Maxim Micic (Serbia) and Nick Johnston (Canada).
